Every birthing day is unique so the needs for a doula vary greatly between woman to woman and indeed family to family. A doula's role has to be flexible to fit in with any situation. Types of support can vary between families especially between first time mums to that of a woman who has children already.
Before Childbirth
Your doula will usually meet with the mother and her birthing companion at least twice before birthing day. She will then be available by phone, email or additional meetings as appropriate. The purpose is to build on the relationship to create trust and a bond before birthing.
During Labour
Your doula is in attendance to offer help and support to both mother and her birthing companion. She will be able to make suggestions to aid relaxation, movement, positioning and breathing techniques. She will also be on hand to help the birthing companion take part in the experience at a pace that they are comfortable with. The doula's most important role is to be fully supportive and offer continuous reassurance throughout the birthing process to enable mother to have the birthing experience she set out to have.
After Childbirth
Your doula will follow up with 1 or 2 postnatal visits to help the family settle in with the new addition. She will be able to provide specific networks or further information with regards to postnatal support should mother or birthing companion need such.
